
Use a heavy 2 qt. saucepan, add the broth, onions, brown sugar, vinegar, and by leaf. Bring to a boil, stir in the cabbage and applesauce. Bring to a simmer.
Reduce heat, cover the saucepan and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender.
Remove the cover, increase the heat to high and cook away any water, stirring the cabbage to prevent burning. Season with salt, if you use it, and pepper.
