Grocery Prices
I have been trying my best to get our grocery spending under $160 a week. There is only two of us and I felt that $160 was far to much. I always shop with a list and usually don’t buy anything more. I plan 7 meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
A typical weeks dinners
- Salmon (frozen) with broccoli
- Ground beef dish with veg.
- Mahi Mahi (frozen) tacos
- Chicken Breasts with fresh green beans
- Steak (top sirloin on sale only)with broccoli
- Home made Pizza (Fri night) with 2oz goat cheese no meat
- Pork Chops with fresh spinach
I don’t buy water any more, never buy soda, pasta, potatoes, desserts of any kind, no sugar, no flour, never buy premade foods of any kind.
I always buy organic fruit
- Nectarines (7)
- Apples (8)
- Melon (2)
- Bananas (7)
- Strawberries(3)
- Berries (2)
- Pineapple frozen (2)
- Sometimes cherries, grapes and plums
Breakfast
Our breakfast is always half cup of OJ with ground flax and a banana. The Greek is the only one that eats bread, he has toast for breakfast with a bit of butter. I cook him chicken breasts for his lunch that he makes into sandwiches. He eats 2 huge loaves of bread a week. He buys it at Costco for $5.79.
Lunch
My lunch is usually a 1/2 cup of Hummus that I make, and a small pita then an apple. My snacks are fruit. TheGreek did bring me $2.70 worth of Sees yesterday. My sugar fix for a month or better.
I do buy eggs, $2.49 for a dozen range free brown eggs. I like them hard boiled for lunch.
No Cheese
I never buy cheese, or milk, I do buy fat free cottage cheese for the Greek. He is a non stop eater after dinner. He has the belly to prove it. I refuse to add to it so I never buy him sweets or nuts. I used to, it has taken months for him to get used to not having almonds to snack on.
Range Fed Organic Beef
I shop at two grocery stores, one for the range fed organic beef the other for the wild caught fish. I spend about $80 in both of them. I have been able to reduce the meat store (Raley’s) by not buying bottled water and a few other items, like organic grapes or cherries. They are just to expensive and don’t last more than a day in this house.
I keep my recites and use them to make my shopping list for the following weeks. I buy laundry products, cat food and personal care products when they are on sale even if we don’t need them. I am finding that they don’t go on sale as often and that the stores seem to have less on the shelves.
I have never been the type to keep lots of food on hand but since we have been having a money crunch I have been keeping lots of food in the freezers. I must have over two weeks or better of meals in the freezers.
Grocery shopping just isn’t fun anymore, it has become a chore an expensive chore. Fruit used to be the cheapest part of my shopping. Not now. I haven’t figured it out exactly but think it is over $30 a week.
I am going to enjoy a big tasty apple right now.
